How to use the points calculator without mistaking an estimate for eligibility
The calculator adds the main Schedule 6D categories for the 189, 190 and 491 pathways. Its job is arithmetic and planning. It cannot decide whether documents satisfy a legal definition or whether an EOI will be nominated or invited.

Before selecting answers
- Choose the intended visa stream and confirm the occupation is eligible.
- Identify the likely invitation date and any birthday or expiry before it.
- Collect the skills assessment, English result and employment timeline.
- Check relationship, study, CCL and nomination facts rather than selecting the desired score.
The 12 categories
The tool asks about age, English, overseas work, Australian work, education, specialist education, Australian study, regional study, professional year, community language, partner status and nomination or sponsorship. It shows points alongside each option and a completion count.
How to interpret the result
- Below 65: the estimate does not reach the published points threshold.
- 65 or above: the arithmetic reaches the threshold, but eligibility and invitation remain unproven.
- Incomplete: the result panel identifies that not all categories have been answered.
The tool does not label scores “good”, “competitive” or “guaranteed”. Use the official round page only for dated historical context.
What the calculator cannot validate
- Whether duties match the nominated or closely related occupation.
- Whether the assessment or English result is valid at invitation.
- Which employment periods Home Affairs can accept.
- Whether study, partner, professional-year or CCL definitions are met.
- Whether a state will nominate or a family sponsor is eligible.
- Health, character, prior refusal, visa status or application validity.
Turn the estimate into an audit
- Open the points calculator and save the selected categories.
- Compare the result with the official Home Affairs calculator.
- For every non-zero category, record the source rule and document.
- Apply invitation-date and expiry checks.
- Update the EOI only when all differences are resolved.
