PTE Academic or IELTS?
Both can support an English claim where the current Home Affairs rules accept the test and delivery format. Neither is universally easier. Choose using practice performance, availability, accessibility needs and the component thresholds that apply on your test date.

The older PTE “50/65/79 in each skill” shorthand does not describe tests taken from 7 August 2025. For an earlier result, use the official table that applies to that date.
Compare the format
- PTE Academic: computer-based, including recorded speaking responses.
- IELTS: available in eligible delivery formats, with a speaking interview.
- Both: require the threshold in every relevant component; a strong overall score cannot repair one component below the required level.
Make a low-risk choice
- Confirm that the exact test and delivery setting are accepted.
- Take official-format practice material for both tests.
- Compare performance in your weakest component.
- Check current booking fees, result services and test dates with the providers.
- Leave time for a retest without assuming a particular result turnaround.
