Australian study points: test every part of the definition
Completing a course in Australia does not automatically earn points. The current category awards 5 points only when the applicant meets the Australian study requirement through eligible registered study, duration, English instruction, physical study and visa conditions.

The five-part test
- Eligible award: the study led to a degree, diploma or trade qualification.
- Registered courses: the course or courses were registered for overseas students where required by the definition.
- Academic duration: the registered study totalled at least two academic years.
- Calendar duration: completion occurred over at least 16 calendar months.
- Study circumstances: instruction was in English and study was undertaken in Australia with a visa authorising study.
Completion date matters
The Regulations define completion as meeting the academic requirements for the award; formal conferral can occur later. Obtain an official completion letter and final transcript showing the academic completion date. A ceremony date alone may not answer the points question.
Course credit and combined courses
Recognition of prior learning, exemptions, course transfers, overlapping enrolment and study outside Australia can affect duration. A two-year course label or visa length is not proof that the study completed satisfies both the academic-year and 16-month tests. Map each enrolment, campus, teaching period and credit decision.

- CRICOS registration and registered duration records.
- Confirmation of teaching language and study mode where not clear.
- Passport, visa and travel records covering the study period.
- Course-credit, transfer and prior-learning decisions.
Separate points categories
Australian study points are separate from the base educational qualification, specialist education and regional study categories. Check each independently. Continue with the regional study guide only if both campus and residence were in designated areas.
